Chapter Thirty-One

We flew into Auckland and spent the night there. Auckland sits at the northern end of Northland, New Zealand, with the airport southwest of the main city on Manukau Harbor, an inlet from the Tasman Sea.

Exhausted from the thirteen-and-a-half-hour trip, we fell into bed after midnight only to be awakened at five to catch the first flight to Wellington.

The hum of the engines lulled me into a semiconscious state as I stared out the window.

Sam touched my hand. “Are you okay? You look worried.”

I hesitated. “Do you think we’ll ever have a family?”

He leaned his head back, gazing into my eyes. “I have no doubts.”

His confidence surprised me. I straightened in my seat. “What makes you so sure?”

“Like we discussed, we can always adopt. Nothing written or unwritten says you must bear our child. At least, not in my rule book.”

“I know, but I don’t want to give up on having our own yet.” It had been six weeks since our last doctor’s visit. Everything looked fine. We agreed not to stress over me getting pregnant. If nothing happened in six months when the case contract ended, we’d consider alternatives. Until then, I’d keep my options open. But I wouldn’t stop worrying.

He reached over and squeezed my hand. “I know, but let’s investigate adoption. Make an informed decision.”

I didn’t respond. Sam released my hand and picked up his book.

After about fifteen minutes, I whispered, “We should.” Still tired from the long flight, I closed my eyes. My thoughts drifted from adoption to Roy Parks’ trail through the public records in New Zealand.

Sam’s silence in the limo ride from the airport was unlike him. I wasn’t in the right frame of mind to discuss it right now. I’d wait for our week alone at the end of the trip. We both needed time to unwind and reconnect.
